A star of our Jasmine Tea Collection, Silver Jasmine (Mo Li Yin Hao) is a sensory bridge between floral elegance and green tea vitality. Legend and history converge in this cup, offering a fragrance so pure it was once dictated by imperial decree. Known for its “silver down” tips and intoxicating aroma, it remains one of the most beloved scented teas in the world.
History suggests that the pairing of jasmine and tea began as a serendipitous accident. Legend tells of an imperial tea party where fragrant white jasmine flowers, used to adorn the Empress’s robes, accidentally fell into her teacup. The resulting aroma was so enchanting that everyone at the party was captivated. Following the Emperor’s personal instructions, jasmine was henceforth specially cultivated to be added to brewed tea, elevating it from a simple beverage to an imperial luxury.

The quality of Mo Li Yin Hao starts with the base tea. Only the young upper leaves are selected, which are covered in a delicate silver down (Hao). These leaves are processed similarly to premium green teas to preserve their fresh, vegetal character. This high-quality “base” is essential, as only the youngest leaves have the porosity to fully absorb the ethereal oils of the jasmine blossoms.
Unlike modern flavored teas that use sprays or oils, Silver Jasmine follows a traditional aromatization process. The finished green tea leaves are laid out in alternating layers with fresh flowers. As the jasmine blossoms open at night, the tea leaves naturally absorb the fragrance. The mixture is then dried at high temperatures to lock in the scent. This labor-intensive process is sometimes a cross-provincial effort, moving raw tea to regions with the best floral terroir.
For our Mo Li Yin Hao, we use a specially cultivated organic grade of jasmine. These flowers are grown without synthetic pesticides to ensure that the aroma remains crisp and authentic. The organic nature of the flowers prevents any “chemical” aftertaste, resulting in a cup that is as clean as it is fragrant.

To avoid “cooking” the delicate jasmine oils, temperature control is essential. We recommend using a Glass Gaiwan to see the silver tips unfurl.
