Monkey King From Taiping (Taiping Houkui) is a crowning jewel in our Green Tea Collection and a variety famous for having the largest leaves in the green tea world. Grown in the Taiping District of Anhui, this tea is celebrated for its ethereal orchid aroma and its prestigious status as a frequent gift to international diplomats.
The unusual name of Monkey King From Taiping is rooted in a beautiful yet tragic myth. It is said that the first tea bush was once the old leader of a monkey pack, transformed into a tree by the heavens. After finding the lifeless body of his beloved son, the monkey king became petrified with inconsolable grief. To this day, the sword-like leaves of Monkey King From Taiping are said to represent the strength and sorrow of that ancient father.

Beyond its taste, Monkey King From Taiping stands out due to its incredible visual presence. The bright green leaves are unusually large, reaching a total of eight centimeters in length. Because of their flat, straight, and sharp appearance, they are often compared to small swords. This “Two Leaves wrapping one Bud” profile is the hallmark of premium Monkey King From Taiping.
To achieve its unique shape, the leaves of Monkey King From Taiping must be processed with extreme care. Each leaf is laid out one by one on a frame covered with cloth, then rolled out manually with a special roller to flatten them. This meticulous “hand-made” process ensures that every leaf maintains its sword-like integrity and flavor profile.
Because the leaves of Monkey King From Taiping are so large and beautiful, a tall glass vessel is the only way to brew them. Watching the long leaves stand vertically in the water is a meditative experience.
