6 Secrets of Green Bamboo Leaf: The Sacred Monastery Tea

Zhu Ye Qing: Fresh Bamboo Tips from the Peaks of Mount Emei

Green Bamboo Leaf (Zhu Ye Qing) is a crowning jewel in our Green Tea Collection and a variety deeply connected to the Buddhist heritage of Mount Emei. For centuries, this tea was a closely guarded secret, enjoyed exclusively by the monks of high-altitude monasteries before it was introduced to the world in the 1960s.

The Legend: The Marshal and the Monastery

The naming of Green Bamboo Leaf is attributed to a famous Chinese military marshal. During a visit to the sacred Mount Emei, he was served the monks’ finest private harvest. The flavor was so impressive that the marshal asked for its name. When the monks confessed they had none, he christened the tea “Fresh Bamboo Tips” due to its vibrant green color and pointed shape. This name later evolved into the modern Zhu Ye Qing.

Terroir: The Misty Slopes of Sichuan

The homeland of Green Bamboo Leaf is the legendary Sichuan Province. Cultivated since ancient times by Buddhist monks, the tea bushes thrive in the cool, misty environment of Mount Emei. These favorable conditions allow the tea to develop a flavor that is exceptionally clean, crisp, and refreshing, without the harshness of low-altitude greens.

  • Elite Plucking: Only the top two leaves with a tender bud are collected.
  • Bamboo Shape: Leaves are crushed and twisted to mimic bamboo foliage.
  • Award Winner: A frequent recipient of the prestigious Chinese Tea Cup award.
  • Mellow Taste: Known for its “Nutty and Umami” finish.

Appearance: The “Sharp Bamboo” Profile

During manufacturing, Green Bamboo Leaf undergoes a specialized process where the leaves are flattened and polished. This gives them a smooth, glossy texture and a sharp, needle-like shape that resembles the foliage of a bamboo forest. In a glass, these leaves often stand vertically, creating a stunning visual display of “Green Bamboo” growing in your cup.

Mastery Brewing: The Vertical Dance

To fully appreciate the Green Bamboo Leaf, we recommend using a tall glass. Watch as the leaves descend and stand upright, a characteristic of the highest-grade Emei teas.
