As the “royalty” of our White Tea Collection, White Peony King (Bai Mu Dan Wang) represents the pinnacle of balance. While Silver Needles offer pure buds and Shou Mei offers mature leaves, the White Peony King harmoniously combines both. This tea is celebrated not just for its exquisite taste, but for the visual spectacle of its leaves “blooming” like petals in the cup—a characteristic documented in fine tea chronicles.
Ancient Chinese folklore traces the origin of this tea to a mountain spirit. Legend tells of a lonely elderly woman living in the high mountains who fell gravely ill during a harsh winter. In her darkest hour, the spirit of the mountain appeared in a dream, pointing toward her yard. When she awoke, her withered, dried peonies had miraculously transformed into lush green tea bushes. The infusion made from these heavenly leaves restored her health within days. Since then, White Peony has been regarded as a symbol of vitality and rebirth.

What distinguishes the “King” grade from standard White Peony is the strict plucking standard. To produce this variety, tea masters collect only one upper leaf and a single tender tea bud. This creates a profile that is richer than bud-only teas but significantly more delicate than those containing multiple leaves. It is the “golden ratio” of white tea.
When dry, the tea leaves truly resemble miniature noble flowers. The high-quality buds are fat and covered in a delicate silver down, which acts as a shield for the plant’s nutrients. Upon steeping, these leaves expand with a grace that is unique to the white tea family, revealing the tender, pale-green undersides of the “King” harvest.
The White Peony King is defined by its sophisticated floral aroma, often compared to wildflowers and honey. The liquor is a pale, shimmering apricot color. On the palate, it offers a silky texture with a lingering, sweet “after-fragrance” (Hui Gan) that is much more pronounced than in lower grades. It is a star of our Best Sellers for those who appreciate nuance.

To preserve the delicate floral notes and avoid scorching the “silver down,” temperature control is vital. We recommend using our Minimalist Glassware for the best visual experience.

It refers to the highest grade of Bai Mu Dan, where the ratio of silver buds to leaves is much higher than standard grades, usually harvested in the first few days of spring.
It’s a matter of preference. While Silver Needle is more “pure,” many collectors prefer the “King” because the leaves provide more body and complexity to the aroma.
Keep it in a cool, dry place away from odors. Like all white teas, it will continue to evolve and become sweeter if stored properly in an airtight container.
