

In our Premium White Tea Collection, White Hair Silver Needle (Bai Hao Yin Zhen) is the most revered. Composed entirely of unopened spring buds, it is the least processed of all teas. Originating from Fujian Province, its hallmark is the shimmering silver “fuzz” that covers each needle, offering a flavor so delicate and ethereal it was once reserved exclusively for the Imperial court.
Fujian folklore tells of a time when these magical tea bushes were a gift from heaven to the common people. However, for centuries, they remained inaccessible, guarded by an evil black dragon who struck down anyone who approached. The legend celebrates a brave young girl who outsmarted the dragon, finally reclaiming the plant for her community. It was believed this tea could cure any disease—a reputation for medicinal potency that continues to this day in traditional culture.


The defining characteristic of Silver Needle is its exclusivity. Unlike other white teas that include leaves, this variety consists only of tea buds. The most valuable harvest occurs in early spring. During this narrow window, the plant concentrates its entire winter-stored energy into the first tender buds, resulting in an infusion rich in amino acids and antioxidants.
Catching the perfect moment for harvest is an art. Tea masters must wait until the silver down completely covers the buds but pluck them before they begin to unfurl or fall under the influence of the spring rains. This down is not just aesthetic; it protects the bud from insects and UV rays, and in the cup, it contributes to the uniquely “thick” and silky mouthfeel that defines the Silver Needle experience.
The processing of Silver Needle is a masterclass in restraint. Unlike green tea (which is pan-fired) or black tea (which is fully oxidized), Silver Needle undergoes no heat treatment (kill-green). After plucking, it follows a long, natural withering process. This lack of intervention preserves the “original taste” of the leaf—expect notes of fresh cucumber, meadow hay, and a hauntingly sweet honey finish.


Because there is no heat treatment, Silver Needle is sensitive. We recommend using Glass Teaware to witness the buds’ vertical dance and ensure the water isn’t boiling, which could scorch the delicate hairs.
